MANILA, Philippines – Authorities on Wednesday turned over a Chinese fugitive who is facing an P11-billion corruption suit in his Beijing.

The Bureau of Immigration and Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission presented Xie Haojie, who evaded Chinese authorities by hiding in the Philippines, to the press on Wednesday morning.

Xie, a former government official, was arrested in a condominium in Pasay last Sunday.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said that Chinese authorities coordinated with BI and the PACC to track down the former Beijing official.

Morente noted that the Chinese government launched a crackdown on corrupt government officials.

He added: “The Philippines and China will continue to strengthen our cooperation in going after Chinese fugitives hiding in our country, including former government officials wanted for corruption,” he added.

Xie is awaiting his deportation papers.

He will be added to the Immigration bureau’s blacklist. – Kristine Joy Patag
