MANILA, Philippines (Updated Jan. 20, 2019, 6:28 p.m.) — The state weather bureau on Wednesday revealed the list of names of the tropical cyclones this year.

PAGASA said the first tropical cyclone of the year starts with “Amang.” The list of cyclone names ends with “Zigzag.”

Here are the names to be given to tropical cyclones this year.

The tropical cyclones’ name always begins with letter  A, as the names are arranged alphabetically.

There are four sets of tropical cyclone names PAGASA use every four years. The fifth year always brings back to the first batch of names.

“In the event that the number of tropical cyclones within the year exceeds 25, an auxiliary list is used, the first ten of which are listed under each column,” PAGASA said.

According to the weather agency, around 19 to 20 cyclones visit the country yearly.

In 2018, 21 cyclones entered the country with Tropical Depression Usman recorded as the last one.

It made landfall in Eastern Samar last December 29 and affected several Luzon provinces. — Rosette Adel

Editor's Note: The original version of the story stated that the names are for typhoons instead of tropical cyclones.
