MANILA, Philippines — Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, daughter of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, will run for senator next year.

She filed her certificate of candidacy on Tuesday and was accompanied by her children and brother Bongbong.

Imee first hinted at her bid to run last February 24 during Baguio City’s 23rd Panagbenga Festival.

She said it has become evident that their generation has to take over the Marcos "legacy."

The Marcos patriarch, whose presidency was tainted by human rights abuses and massive corruption, was ousted in a 1986 "People Power" revolution.

Despite the death of the strongman while in exile in Hawaii in 1989, his family has been making a political comeback with his widow, Imelda, and their children getting elected to office.

Imee placed in the 7-11 bracket in the pre-senatorial election survey released by Pulse Asia last month. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral
