Duterte’s independence message: Defend democratic ideals

MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte is urging Filipinos to defend democratic ideals and to aspire for meaningful change as the Philippines celebrates today the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of its independence.

Duterte said the “patriotic fervor” shown by the Philippines’ forefathers had freed the country from colonial subjugation and proved to the world that Filipinos stand united as the pioneer of republican democracy in Asia.

Duterte will lead Independence Day rites at the Emilio Aguinaldo Museum in Kawit, Cavite.

Aguinaldo, widely acknowledged as the first Philippine president, proclaimed the country’s independence from Spain from the window of his house in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898. 

Vice President Leni Robredo will lead the 120th Independence Day commemoration at Rizal Park in Manila.

After the Rizal Park event, Robredo will preside over the mass oath taking of new village officials in Rosario, Cavite.

“May the solidarity and heroism exhibited by our ancestors fuel our desire to spur meaningful and lasting change in our communities as we collectively battle the social ills of corruption, illegal drugs and criminality that impede our progress as a nation,” Duterte said in his Independence Day message.  

“Inspired by the sacrifices of those who have bravely stood before us, may we also find the courage to defend our cherished democratic ideals now and in the years to come,” he added. 

“By cherishing the sovereignty that is borne out of the sweat and blood of our heroes, we stand firm and unwavering in our conviction to create a brighter and better future for all Filipinos, regardless of their status in life,” the President said. 

Duterte, who has repeatedly spoken against the colonial rule of Spain and the United States in the Philippines, reiterated his promise to improve the quality of life of Filipinos. –  With Helen Flores, Edith Regalado
