SC mourns passing of former justice
MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) announced the passing of former Associate Justice Flerida Ruth Pineda-Romero last Friday. She was 88.
The SC posted on its official Twitter account that Romero, who served the SC for almost eight years from Oct. 21, 1991 until her retirement on Aug. 1, 1999, had died.
“The SC mourns the passing of its 125th Associate Justice, Honorable Flerida Ruth P. Romero. She served as secretary general of the 1986 Constitutional Commission, taught at the University of the Philippines (UP) and was director of the UP Law Center.”
SC spokesman Theodore Te said that up until yesterday they still did not have information as to the cause of her death or details of the wake and funeral.
Romero, who was born on Aug. 1, 1929 in Tondo, Manila, served in the SC during the terms of former presidents Corazon Aquino, Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada.
She received a Law degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1952 and received her Master of Laws from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1955.
She served as director and dean of the UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations from 1962 until 1963.
She was regarded as an expert on the Civil Code of the Philippines.
