Cayetano attends cremation of late Thai King

MANILA, Philippines — On behalf of President Rodrigo Duterte, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano attended the Royal Cremation of the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej in Bangkok, Thailand.
King Bhumibol died on Oct. 13, 2016, during the 70th year of his reign, following a lingering illness. The official mourning period in Thailand is one year.
"His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the Father of a nation, well-loved and revered for his seventy years of reign characterized by wisdom, compassion and remarkable progress," Cayetano said in a statement.

Cayetano and his wife, Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano, joined the Royal Thai Family, the Thai people and other foreign dignitiaries in the ceremony, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Former President Benigno Aquino III also paid his respects to the late Thai King, as posted on his official Twitter account.

He was welcomed by H.E. Mr. Thanatip Upatising, Ambassador of Thailand to the Philippines and his wife Madam Monthip Upatising.

Thousands of people took part in the ceremony on Thursday at the Royal Pavilion, Sanam Luang Grounds in Bangkok to pay their final respects to King Bhumibol.
The Royal Cremation Ceremony, which lasted for five days, marked the end of the year-long mourning period in Thailand.
