MANILA, Philippines - President Duterte called on the youth yesterday to develop love for the country and to instill discipline so they would become responsible citizens.
“Do not let this country deteriorate and go to the dogs,” Duterte said.
During the opening of the Palarong Pambansa in Antique, Duterte said the youth must now have a sense of responsibility because they would inherit the country from their elders.
“You now have a sense of discipline… You have to build something. It’s not all physical. It’s also mental and the desire to win. I need to pass it on to you before I die,” Duterte said.
“…you are the fathers and mothers of tomorrow. That tomorrow is just a few sunrises and sunsets. It’s just around the corner. It will soon be your turn,” he added.
Duterte said his administration is investing heavily on the youth, particularly on education, so they can become competitive. He noted that education gets the lion’s share in this year’s budget, something that the state is required to do under the 1987 Constitution.
“We’re trying to build competitiveness, fairness, values and sense of goodwill among the youth,” the President said.
“It’s my sacred duty to transfer to you the values we hold very, very dear,” he added.
Duterte said his fight against corruption and illegal drugs was meant to secure the future of the youth.
“I will stop graft and corruption. I’m on my way forward,” the President said.
Duterte congratulated the education department, local governments and organizers of the Palarong Pambansa, a moment that he said belongs to the participants.
He even joked about giving P50,000 to each member of the Region 11 or Davao region team who will win medals. Duterte served as mayor of Davao City for more than a decade.
