MANILA, Philippines (Philippines News Agency) — The death toll for the "habagat" or southwest monsoon onslaught has now climbed to 13, with nine missing and six injured.
This was disclosed by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in its 8 a.m. Wednesday advisory.
This can be broken down into one drowning in Barangay Canaullian, Janiuay, Iloilo; another drowning in Don Benito St., Sampaloc, Manila; two deaths due to a collapsed firewall in 866 Oroquieta St., Sta. Cruz, Manila; another drowning death in Barangay Mariana, Quezon City; two deaths due to flashflood that hit the Sumag River Tunnel in Gen. Nakar, Quezon; another drowning in Barangay Calasaguen, Brooke's Point, Palawan; and another drowning in Barangay Upig, San Idelfonso, Bulacan; another drowning in Barangay Castanos Cerca, Gen. E. Aguinaldo, Cavite and three electrocution deaths in Sitio Kamalig, Barangay Reparo, Nasugbu, Batangas.
While the missing persons can be broken down into one fisherman who went missing while fishing in Barangay Bognuyan, Gasan, Marinduque; four in the flashflood in the Sumag River Tunnel; another fisherman in Barangay Calasaguen, Brooke's Point, Palawan; two scavengers in Barangay San Juan, Exodus, Cainta, Rizal who were reportedly swept by flood waters; and one swimmer in Villarica Subdivision, Barangay Poblacion, Sta. Maria, Bulacan.
A total of 55,963 families or 262,271 persons were affected by the "habagat" rains in Region 1, III, CALABARZON, Region VI, National Capital Region and Cordillera Autonomous Region.
Out of this number, 4,487 families or 17,896 persons are still housed in 77 designation evacuation centers.
Heavy rains triggered by the southwest monsoon have been pouring over Metro Manila and various parts of Luzon since Aug. 8.
