Timeline: GMA plunder case
MANILA, Philippines – July 16, 2012 – Ombudsman files a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan against former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on the alleged misuse of P366 million in Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) intelligence funds during her presidency.
Oct. 4, 2012 – Sandiganbayan issues warrant against her in connection with the plunder case. Her camp asks the anti-graft court to dismiss the resolution following the issuance of the warrant.
Oct. 24, 2012 – Arroyo seeks a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Supreme Court (SC) to stop the hearing of the case before the Sandiganbayan.
Oct. 29, 2012 – Arroyo refuses to enter any plea during her arraignment at the Sandiganbayan.
Nov. 6, 2013 – Sandiganbayan junks Arroyo’s bid for temporary freedom in relation to the PCSO fund scam.
May 13, 2013 – She is reelected as congressional representative of Pampanga’s second district while being held without bail at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City.
May 14, 2014 –The prosecution rests their case in the plunder trial of Arroyo as they have no more witnesses to present against her.
April 6, 2015 – Sandiganbayan finds sufficient evidence to sustain plunder charges against her and other co-accused, thus denying the demurrers to evidence she filed in August 2014.
Oct. 14, 2015 – Arroyo seeks reelection in Pampanga’s second district in 2016.
Oct. 15, 2015 – In a 124-page petition for certiorari, the Arroyo camp asks the high court to dismiss the charges against her, citing insufficiency of evidence.
Nov. 24, 2015 – SC extends status quo ante order stopping the plunder trial of Arroyo before the Sandiganbayan, which was extended for 90 days or until Feb. 19, instead of the original 30-day stay issued on Oct. 20.
March 11, 2016 – SC again extends the SQA for another 60 days or until April 20.
May 3, 2016 – For the third time, SC extends the SQA to June 20 “unless sooner revoked by the Court.”
July 19, 2016 – SC dismisses plunder charges against Arroyo in a vote of 11-4 due to lack of evidence.
