MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Panfilo "Ping" Lacson on Tuesday suggested that a two-party system would improve the present Philippine political system.
"Kung may strong two-party system, maliwanag ang platform ng bawat partido, at kung saan ka sasama doon ka nakatugma kung ano ang tinatayuan mo, pipili ka sa dalawang partidong 'yan," Lacson said.
The former senator noted that having a two-party system is one of the possible amendments to the 1987 Constitution worth considering.
Lacson said that the current multi-party system in the country should be modified to avoid members from switching parties out of convenience.
"Para mag-mature tayo as a country sa politics, mas maganda ang two-party system para may party platform and advocacy na pwedeng pagpilian," Lacson said.
The Philippines was under a two-party system from 1945 to 1972 until former President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.
Lacson is running as an independent senatorial candidate for the May 9 elections. He ranked second in the latest Social Weather Stations pre-election survey with a rating of 49 percent.
