Classes resume Monday

MANILA, Philippines – Classes in public elementary and high schools will resume on Monday following a 16-day Christmas break, the Department of Education (DepEd) said yesterday.

DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro earlier signed a department order approving the calendar for the current school year.

Based on the order, private schools may deviate from the school calendar released by DepEd, but should comply with Republic Act 7797, which set the provisions on the length of an academic year.

The current school year consists of 201 school days.

Office work will also resume at the University of the Philippines (UP) on Monday.

UP president Alfredo Pascual earlier declared a mandatory holiday break in all UP campuses starting Dec. 19.

“A mandatory holiday break will ensure the promotion of work and life balance for UP faculty and staff, generate savings in utilities and maintenance, as well as encourage administrative efficiency in planning and scheduling work,” said Pascual.
