Comelec postpones release of official list of candidates
MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday announced that it has postponed the release of the official list of candidates for the 2016 national elections to December 23.
The Comelec was supposed to release the official list of candidates today.
Comelec Chair Andy Bautista said during a press conference that the commission has enough time to finalize the list of candidates as the printing of ballots is scheduled on January 2016.
Bautista noted that the Comelec en banc needs to hold marathon sessions to resolve the 29 motions for reconsideration filed before it.
The Comelec en banc is yet to rule on the substitution issue of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and the disqualification case of Sen. Grace Poe.
Bautista said that the Comelec is still deliberating on substitution cases. The Comelec en banc will meet to decide if they will accept the substitution of Duterte.
The two divisions of the Comelec have already disqualified Poe from the presidential race, citing material misrepresentation on her 2013 certificate of candidacy for senator.
The Comelec chief clarified that the decision of the two divisions on Poe's disqualification will not be consolidated.
Bautista assured that the names of the candidates will be finalized before the printing of official ballots for the 2016 polls.
