Binay: Probe questionable if PNoy picks truth body members

Vice President Jejomar Binay is not in favor of President Benigno Aquino III appointing members of the proposed fact-finding body on the Mamasapano clash. STAR File

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday said the investigation on the Mamasapano clash may have problems with impartiality if President Benigno Aquino III will be the one to choose the members of the proposed Truth Commission.

"Having the members appointed by the president as proposed by several administration senators will certainly cast doubts on their impartiality," Binay said in a statement.

Though the vice president is in favor of creating a fact-finding body which would probe the events leading to the death of 44 police commandos, Binay suggested that the investigating body should be independent.

"I further propose that the Catholic Church and other religious groups become part of this independent fact-finding commission, which should include former chief justices of the Supreme Court, and other eminent personalities who are not identified with the administration or any political organization," Binay added.

Sen. Teofisto Guingona III earlier proposed to create a Truth Commission wherein the president will have to appoint its members.

Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Sr. and former Sen. Wigberto Tañada are possible appointees, according to Guingona.

On the other hand, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda assured on Monday that there will be no whitewash during the investigation of the Mamasapano clash.
