Gazmin: AFP trying to contain Misuari

MANILA, Philippines - Security forces are trying to restrict the movements of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founder Nur Misuari, who is facing rebellion charges over the attacks staged by his followers in Zamboanga City last year.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Misuari, who has been evading authorities for almost a year now, is still in Sulu.

“Right now, the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) in Jolo Island is containing him in one place,” Gazmin told radio station dzRH Thursday.

“He has a warrant of arrest and the Philippine National Police has to serve that. It’s a joint operation between the PNP (Philippine National Police) and AFP,” he added.

Gazmin said they are assessing how many troops would be deployed for Misuari’s arrest to prevent bloody confrontations.

Earlier, the MNLF claimed that Misuari reappeared in Sulu and led a flag-raising ceremony to stress the independence of the so-called Federated States of Bangsamoro Republik.

Misuari also urged his followers to continue to fight for their right to self-determination.

AFP public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said they are still confirming whether Misuari really resurfaced in Sulu.

“Nur Misuari should take responsibility by submitting himself to the rule of law and face the consequences of his group's actions,” Zagala said in an earlier statement.

Misuari, along with 60 of his followers, is facing cases over the Zamboanga crisis, which left more than 200 people dead and P200-million worth of properties damaged.

The 20-day crisis started after Misuari’s followers of Misuari tried to hoist their flag at the city hall and held hostage several civilians.

An arrest warrant was issued against Misuari and his followers last October but until now, the MNLF founder remains at large.
