8 members of NPA-controlled group surrender

MANILA, Philippines - Eight members of an underground group controlled by the New People’s Army (NPA) have surrendered to military forces in South Cotabato, an official said Monday.

Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman Cpt. Alberto Caber said the eight turned themselves over to the 27th Infantry Battalion in Lake Sebu town last Sunday.

The former NPA allies who surrendered were identified as Ruben Dalisan, farmers’ sector team leader; Ruben Timbang; Torib Tuan; Dicky Tuan; and Banas Sodaw all members of the farmers’ sector; Jemma Dalisan and Finish Timbang both members of the women’s sector; and Jomer Dalisan of the youth sector.

Caber claimed members of the underground mass organization were exploited and deceived by the communist rebels.

“Members are not aware that they are the CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines)-NPA’s source of man-power such as for anti-government rallies, contacts for extortion, support role in the conduct of atrocities and many other criminal activities,” he said in a statement.

Caber said about 450 members of underground groups formed by the NPA have surrendered to authorities this year. (with a report from Irene Bongcales)
