OWWA monitoring kidnapping of OFW

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay said the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is closely coordinating with Malaysian authorities on the kidnapping of a Filipina worker and a Chinese tourist in a resort in Borneo island last week.

The Abu Sayyaf group is tagged as the prime suspects in the kidnapping of Filipina resort worker Marcy Dayawan, 40, and Gao Huayuan, 29.

Binay, presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers concerns, said over the weekend that the standard procedure whenever an OFW got entangled with problems abroad is that the information is automatically forwarded to the OWWA.

“In cases like that, it is given to OWWA because documented OFWs have safeguards. Of course, we are coordinating,” Binay said.

Binay also said that the government is contacting the family of Dayawan, and is “still waiting for an update.”
