MANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday recalled some variants of Lily's Peanut Butter found to be containing excessive amounts of aflatoxin, a species of fungi.
In an advisory, the FDA noted that affected jars of Lily's Peanut Butter, manufactured by Newborn Food Products, Inc., are identified under Lot No. A1 10:26, with expiry date May 23, 2014.
"The recall involves only the specified product under the mentioned lot number and no other Lily's peanut butter variants and sizes are affected by the recall," the FDA added.
The bureau only allows a certain level of aflatoxin present to food or animal feed, as high and repeated exposure to the fungi may affect children's growth and can even cause liver cancer in adults.
Aflatoxin is found internationally in peanut butter, cooking oils and cosmetic products as it occurs in sourced host crops.
The FDA said the recall order is effective immediately and advised retail outlets to coordinate with the manufacturer to have them replaced. - Camille Diola
