MANILA, Philippines — Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares is confident that the "People's Champ" Manny Pacquiao will pay 32 percent of his next fight purse in taxes.
"Whatever he earns from that fight, he has to declare it in his [Income Tax Return] in 2014," Henares said in a televised interview aired over ABS-CBN Thursday night.
"Siguro naman by this time, natuto naman siya kung ano'ng dapat gawin. Meron naman siyang abogado, meron naman siyang accountant," she added.
Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum had announced that Pacquiao will earn a guaranteed $20 million from his rematch with WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley on April 12.
Henares said, however, said that Pacquiao can avoid being levied taxes twice for his next match.
"[Kung] may binayad kang buwis sa ibang bansa, pwede mong i-awas 'yon. Pero kailangan documented," Henares said.
Pacquiao has been embroiled in a tax trouble with the BIR and the US Internal Revenue Service. Henares had declared that the champion fighter, who is also Sarangani representative, owes $50 million in back taxes from 2008 to 2009.
Pacquiao's bank accounts in the Philippines have also been frozen with garnishment order, but he has been freed from lien against his assets in the US last December.
The boxer is currently undergoing training for his match with Bradley in Los Angeles.
