Court moves Corona's arraignment to June

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Court of Tax Appeals on Wednesday reset the arraignment of ousted Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona on the tax evasion charges filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The court granted the request of Corona's lawyers to suspend the proceedings pending the resolution of the motion for reconsideration they filed at the DOJ.

The arraignment was reset to June 4 at 9 a.m.

The tax raps are based on the complaint filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for the ouster magistrate's "willful" failure to file his income tax returns for six taxable years between 2003 and 2010.

Corona, meanwhile, had posted a P120,000 bail bond for the 12 counts of tax evasion charges.

The tax case was filed the BIR after Corona's ouster from his post as Supreme Cout Chief Justice through an impeachment proceeding by Congress.

Corona was found guilty by the impeachment court, composed of the members of the Senate, on Dec. 12, 2011.
