PhlPost to hold 1st National Letter Writing Day

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) wants to bring back the interest of young Filipinos in letter writing, in this era of email, text messages and social media, by holding the 1st National Letter Writing Day.

In a statement, PHLPost said that the 1st National Letter Writing Day is in line with the celebration of the World Post Day on Oct. 9.

The event would be held in elementary and secondary schools nationwide and at SM North Edsa Skydome, SM Baguio, SM Pampanga, SM Baliwag, SM Naga, SM Consolacion, SM Iloilo and SM Davao.

The participants would be asked to write thank you letters.

The National Letter Writing Day is part of PHLPost’s postal awareness program called “Sulat Mulat,” with the aim of re-introducing the art of letter writing to students and encouraging them to use letters as a means of communication.

PHLPost reportedly plans to make National Letter Writing Day an annual event and it is hoping to secure a presidential proclamation to institutionalize the occasion.

During the event at SM North EDSA Skydome, PHLPost would also give the Award of Merit given by the Universal Postal Union to Cy Rodriguez, whose entry in the 42nd International Letter Writing Competition for Young People placed fourth from more than a million entries worldwide.

Rodriguez was a senior student at Senator Renato Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School when he joined the contest last year. He is the first Filipino to receive such recognition.
