Completion of NAIA 3 repair seen next year

Lawrence Agcaoili - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The P1.9-billion rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 is expected to be completed by the third quarter of next year, according to the Department of Transportation and Communications.

The completion of the project is seen to double the capacity of the terminal to 13 million passengers per year.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said the government has reached an agreement with Takenaka Corp. to complete the project in 12 months and make it operational by August 2014.

The project includes integration of airport systems like baggage handling, flight information displays, computer terminals, gate coordination, and fire protection systems, among others.

Abaya said a fully operational NAIA Terminal 3 would boost the Aquino administration’s chances of meeting its 10-million tourist arrival target by 2016. The terminal currently accommodates 37,000 passengers daily. The figure is expected to rise to 75,000 upon the completion of Terminal 3 rehabilitation.
