P36-million garnishment order on Imelda bank deposits served

MANILA, Philippines - An order of garnishment on P36.55 million in bank deposits of former first lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos has been served on the Philippine Veterans Bank.

Reporting to the Sandiganbayan, acting chief judicial staff officer Albert de la Cruz said he has already issued a copy of the sheriff’s return on garnishment to the office of the Ilocos Norte lawmaker.

“We’re not going to freeze Mrs. Marcos’ whole bank account, only P36.55 million,” he said. “If the account exceeds P36.55 million, the surplus cash is not covered by our garnishment.”

The Veterans Bank main office Servicing Department did not disclose the total amount contained in the account of Marcos, De la Cruz said.

The anti-graft court seeks to recover from Marcos the money to satisfy a September 2010 ruling directing her to repay the government P10 million plus interest siphoned from the National Food Authority in July 1983.
