MANILA, Philippines - Environment groups urged the government to order the immediate recall of baby feeding bottles containing a toxic substance called Bisphenol A or BPA.
EcoWaste Coalition and Save Babies Coalition said infants and toddlers should be protected from toxic chemicals such as BPA, an endocrine disruptor that can leach from polycarbonate (PC) bottles when heated.
“The government has the duty to guarantee the right to health and safety of all consumers, especially babies who totally rely on decisions made by adults,” said Aileen Lucero of EcoWaste.
Canada, the European Union and China have recently banned the manufacture and use of baby bottles with traces of BPA.
To save babies from plastic poisoning, the groups recommend cup feeding instead of bottle feeding.
EcoWaste also reminded consumers to avoid the use of polycarbonate plastic containers, usually marked “PC” or the number “7.”
In heating food, use a plate instead of plastic cling wrap.
