Padilla, Remulla are NP's bets for speaker

- Charlie Lagasca -

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya , Philippines  – It will be a toss-up between Rep. Carlos Padilla of this province and Cavite Rep. Crispin Remulla for the speakership of the House of Representatives if Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearer Sen. Manuel Villar wins the presidency, according to a reliable source from Villar’s camp.

The source added that among the NP candidates for speaker, Padilla has the advantage because of his closeness and long friendship with Villar.

Padilla, 65, admitted hearing talks about being considered for the post but said he would like to concentrate on winning the elections first.

“It’s an honor to be included among the choices but I am more focused on winning this election,” said Padilla, who is seeking his second term for the lone congressional district seat here.

It was earlier reported that the Liberal Party (LP) will field comebacking three-term congressman Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte for speaker while former President Joseph Estrada of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino is eyeing Camarines Sur Rep. Arnulfo Fuentebella for the post.   – With Christina Mendez
