Comelec approves NP-NPC coalition
MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has approved the coalition of the Nacionalista Party (NP) and the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
The Comelec’s acknowledgment of the merging of the two parties is expected to pave the way for the declaration of the NP-NPC as the dominant minority party.
Comelec Commissioner Lucenito Tagle said the Commission had already signed a resolution recognizing the NP-NPC coalition.
“They were saying that the coalition is a sham but during our examination and careful evaluation they could not prove this allegation,” Tagle said.
The Liberal Party of Sen. Benigno Aquino III questioned the legality of the merger of NP and NPC, but failed to substantiate their claim that the union of the two parties was bogus.
NPC was founded by San Miguel Corp. chairman Eduardo Cojuangco while NP is the political party of presidential bet Sen. Manuel Villar. – Mayen Jaymalin
