Troops capture 3 Abu supporters in Sulu

-

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Government troops in Sulu have captured three suspected Abu Sayyaf supporters during a raid as well as a scion of a powerful political clan and a follower for violation of the election gun ban.

Maj. Gen. Ruben Rafael, anti-terror Joint Task Force Comet chief based in Jolo said the three suspected supporters of the Abu Sayyaf were nabbed in a raid launched jointly by Marines and Scout Rangers last Friday in Barangay Kanaway, Parang town.

Seized from the suspects were a Browning Automatic Rifle and a Garand, as well as several rounds of ammunitions.

“We may have slowed down the operation to help secure the conduct of the elections but the hunt against the terrorists continued and this was proven with the arrest of the suspects,” Rafael said.

Rafael also said that in the course of their strict implementation of the gun ban, Marines and Scout Rangers also arrested former Sulu provincial board member Abdulkadil Estino and his bodyguard Abdul Ammad in Panglima Estino town on election day.

Rafael said Estino and his escort went to the municipal hall carrying loaded M-16 rifles.

“Charges of illegal possession of firearms and gun ban violation have been filed with the provincial prosecutors’ office and Sulu provincial police,” Rafael said.

Sulu is one of the provinces in the country with the biggest number of loose firearms.   – Roel Pareño
