Amidst performing and hosting commitments, Gary Valenciano is able to squeeze in and pursue advocacies. One of which is how diabetic persons like him can manage their health condition. Gary V’s journey with Type 1 diabetes began at the age of 14.

“It can be the most deceiving of all illnesses,” said the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) icon in a recent press conference held virtually about a continuous glucose monitoring system, “‘coz sometimes you think you’re OK, but things can be going on inside of you if you don’t take care of yourself the way you should.”

Taking care of oneself means living healthy. To achieve this, following Gary V’s line of thought, a diabetic person has to change his or her diet, find time to exercise, take proper medication and strengthen faith. These are the factors why Gary V. is successfully living with his health condition.

“There’s got to be a reason why I still have my diabetes after so many years, over four decades now,” he shared. “I’ve been given the best doctors… but really it’s my faith that has kept me going, up here and in here (pointing to his head and heart). I’ve been provided with a lot of things that have been able to make things easier. And I say easier because it’s a challenge to take care of diabetes and my advocacy is to provide, you know, medical assistance to Filipinos with diabetes through the Shining Light Foundation.”

The foundation was established by Gary V and his wife Angeli Pangilinan. “It was first used to channel support for church workers,” recalled he, “and then, it branched out to those who were underprivileged, and then, now it’s to provide medical support to Filipinos living with diabetes through donations and diabetes education. I do want to inspire more Filipinos living with diabetes that it is possible to remove the mystery behind the condition.”

And once the mystery has been known through gaining knowledge, he said it will be easy for a person to approach the condition with strength in the heart and faith in God.

He added, “It’s also possible for us to live life better through proper diabetes management, powered by accurate and real-time data.” Such is made possible by the technology called FreeStyle Libre, composed of a small, discreet patch-like sensor and a reader. Gary V, the FreeStyle Libre diabetes champion said that the challenging part is monitoring how high or low his glucose level is. With the technology, even if Gary V is asleep, someone like his wife can monitor his glucose. It also removes the hassle of doing finger pricking and gives him an eight-hour glucose history as to what time of the day his glucose goes up and down, said he, who can spare himself from the guessing game.

Whatever activity he engages or dabbles in, Gary V can monitor his glucose trend, even in the middle of a concert.

“It stays, in fact, I go mountain biking (and) it rains all the time, it stays. If you wanna swim, it can be submerged up to one meter,” said he of the technology that gives him the confidence to manage his health condition.

These days, Gary V is also busy preparing for the Gary V Reenergized U.S. Tour Live. The musical engagement, which features Yeng Constantino and Kiana Valenciano as guest performers, commences on Sept. 30 at Pantages Theater in Tacoma, Washington and goes to Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks, California on Oct. 1; Pechanga Casino, Temecula, California, Oct. 8; and Royce Hall, UCLA, Los Angeles, California, Oct. 9.

After that, Gary V and his team bring the show to Texas Hall, Dallas Texas on Oct. 15 and Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Anchorage, Alaska, Oct. 21. Gary V and Kiana will culminate the tour at The Town Hall in New York on Oct. 23. For details on Gary V’s US tour, call 8189138998 and 8189135818 or visit Starmedia Entertainment Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Again, given his hectic schedule, Gary V, the Idol Philippines Season 2 judge, has always time to promote a cause that is close to his heart.
