CEBU, Philippines — The Toledo City Trojans and the Cebu City Machers both pulled a rousing twinkill in the third and final elimination round of the inaugural Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP)-All Filipino Conference online tournament played last Wednesday night on lichess platform.

Composed of playing co-team owner Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang, team manager FA Felix Poloyapoy Jr., skipper Bonn Rainauld Tibod, IM Rico Mascariñas, NMs Rommel Ganzon and Rogelio Enriquez, Jr., Ronald Ganzon, Richard Natividad, Glicerio Pardillo Jr., Christopher Tubalado, and Jinky Catulay, the Trojans first dispatched the Mindoro Tamaraws, 12-9, and then crushed the Palawan Queen’s Gambit, the country’s first all-women pro chess team, via a 13.5-7.5 decision.

The Machers, behind the efforts of NM Elwin Retanal, FIDE Master Anthony Makinano, International Artiber Linky Yap, Mark Mangubat, Cephas Seguisabal, Eduard De la Torre and Marphine Faith Mangubat, notched their first ever double victory at the expense of Mindoro, 11.5-9.5, and the Iriga City Oragons, 13.5-7.5.

On the other hand, the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, manned by NMs Edsel Montoya and Mario Mangubat, Women’s International Master Bernadette Galas, PCAP Vice Chairman Ariel Potot, Allan Pason, Rex Androe Cabuncal, Francisco Rivera, and Dione Patrick Minoza, got past their neighbors Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors, 12-9, in an all-Cebu clash but were hammered by the formidable Iloilo Kisela Knights, 3.5-17.5.

The Naki Warriors of NM Merben Roque, Aldwin Daculan, Bryle Arellano, Cristy Cabungcag, Odilon Badilles, Romeo Resuera, Neil Adrian Gilig, and Kraig Quinain wallowed in double whammy as they were slammed by the GM Mark Paragua-led Camarines Soaring Eagles, 7-14, before bowing to Cordova.

In the Southern Conference standings, Toledo is still the highest ranked among four Cebu teams at joint fourth and fifth place with the Zamboanga Sultans on identical 20-13 win-loss records. Lapu-Lapu (14-19) is at sixth spot, Cordova (12-21) eighth and Cebu City (8-25) a far 10th. — EBV
