Fiesta People, J&J Angels start strong
CEBU, Philippines — The Fiesta People and Team J&J Angels Enterprise both opened their respective campaigns with a win at the start of the Mayor Edgardo Labella Volleyball Cup Open men and women’s tournament the other night at the Cebu City Sports Institute.
The Fiesta People, composed mostly of players from Cebu Institute of Technology-University, scored an upset victory over reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (CESAFI) men’s champion Southwestern University Phinma, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22.
SWU-Phinma is considered as one of the early favorites, but playing coach Emmanuel Marlon Luces of Fiesta People was able to motivate his teammates fight hard and beat their foes.
Mischka and Sports Yu also started their campaigns strong in the men’s bracket.
Mischka led by two-time NCAA MVP Joebert Almodiel silenced University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 25-22, 25-22, while Sports Yu pummeled University of Cebu, 25-19, 25-19.
In the women’s action, J&J Angels upended UC lady spikers, 26-24, 19-25, 25-14.
The USPF girls were also victorious over Team Marias, 25-9, 26-24, while Harbor Pilot beat SWU-Phinma, 26-24, 25-22.
