CEBU, Philippines —  The University of the Visayas SBP and Passerelle teams are out to make a statement scoring convincing wins on opening day of the SBP Passerelle Twin tournament backed by Milo at the Sacred Heart School Mango Avenue campus gym.

The UV SBP team outscored Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 44-28, while the UV Passerelle Lancers dropped the bomb on Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, 66-19.

UV started out slowly against the Magis Eagles SBP side, taking an 11-7 lead at the end of the first period. Neil John Bernante then scored 11 points in a second period charge that gave UV a commanding lead at 28-11 at halftime, a gap that wouldn’t be threatened for the rest of the game. Bernanted led UV with 13 points while John Louie Bual added 12.

Kyean Gubat led SHS-Ateneo with 7. In the Passerelle division, UV led from start to finish, limiting SMS-Boystown to only four points in the first half to get its season going on a high note. Scores for the first three periods were 16-2, 31-4 and 55-8. Enricke Herbito led UV with nine as Jeiel Abellana had eight. Adonis Codoy led SMS-Boystown with seven.

The opening ceremony is the first of among twelve provincial legs taking place nationwide aside from the Metro Manila leg. The other areas are Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, Lucena, Baguio, Pangasinan, Baguio, Bacolod, Iloilo, Roxas, Metro Manila and Cebu.
