SWU tops women's bracket in CESAFI volleyball tilt

CEBU, Philippines - NETWORKSThe grandslam campaign of Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras gained further momentum after they beat the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in four sets to top the women's bracket with perfect 5-0 record in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball tournament yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

NETWORKSSWU of coach Jordan Paca jumped off to a sizzling 25-22 start through the efforts of Raphril Aguilar, Princess Anne Pido, Danika Gendrauli, Lorie May Layno and Fritzie Aligway, but the Grace Antigua-mentored USJ-R fired back with a 25-19 victory courtesy of the comebacking Michelle Simbajon, Ma. Abegail Praca, Mytha Padillo, Mona Dubduban and Luigi Gomez.

NETWORKSHowever, SWU did not give USJ-R some breathing space anymore and went on to sweep the next two sets, 25-22, 25-11.

NETWORKSIn the other match, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Lady Panthers breezed past the Cebu Doctors University (CDU) Lady Stallions also in four sets.

NETWORKSCDU of coach Fr. Rey T. Manayon actually triumphed in the opening set, 25-19, spearheaded by Athena Sucalit, Christy Marquez and Marjorie Coloscos.

NETWORKSBut that was the best it could muster as USPF of coach Thelma Datig bombed the Lady Stallions out in the next three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-23.

NETWORKSAmong those who figured prominently for USPF's win were Apple Eve Sarau, Dianne Navaja, Jennielou Villeguez and Aileen Singson.

NETWORKSIn the secondary division, 10-time champion USPF Baby Panthers bowed to the equally-tough USJ-R.

NETWORKSThe Roldan Potot-mentored USJ-R thrashed USPF, 12-25, 25-19, 25-16 to clinch the top spot in the girls division. – (FREEMAN)
