Lapu-Lapu Fiesta Cup golf set

CEBU, Philippines - The 1st Lapu-Lapu Fiesta Cup Golf Tournament tees off on November 13 and 14 at the Mactan Island Golf Club.

The tournament was officially launched yesterday by the organizing committee through a press conference held at the MIGC clubhouse.

The two-day event will feature a format different from the usual two-man team events with the first day of action to be a scramble format and the second round will follow the alternate shot format.

Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Legaspi, chairman of the board of MIGC, said that this is part of the club’s contribution to the sports tourism efforts of the city.

He also bared that the golf club and the Philippine Air Force are now actively promoting other sporting activities geared at promoting camaraderie among the men and women in uniform and civilians.

Efren Belarmino, general manager of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa and chairman of the event, said that tournament is open to all interested with an entry fee of P5,000 per team.

Retired Gen. Rodante Joya, general manager of MIGC, said that tourists, who want to join, are encouraged to bring their club certified handicaps to qualify.

Teams shall be classified under four handicap categories depending on the average of the two players. Class A will be for 0 to 12, B for 13 to 19, C for 20 to 24 and D for 25 and above. There will also be a ladies division.

In case a team is composed of a male and a female player, such will be classified under the four handicap categories.

The champions and runner-up for each class will receive trophies and other prizes.

There will also be the lowest gross and lowest net champions.

Joya said that tee off time will be from 5:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. The awards ceremony on the 14th will be held at Casino Filipino inside the Waterfront Airport Hotel in Mactan.

Belarmino said that he is very thankful to Pagcor for the support it is giving the tournament.

Initially, hole-in-one prizes are P50,000 in non-cashable chips from Pagcor, a set of Honma 5-star irons and a Yamaha motorcycle.

The organizing committee is still negotiating for a car to be put on the line for an ace.

Belarmino added that the golf course will have a very festive mood during the event and they are planning to tap various companies to make that happen.
