Cebu City intensifies drive against selling of liquors to minors

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government is pushing to intensify its monitoring of the different establishments that serve liquor to minors in the city.

This after at least six establishments across the Cebu Doctor’s University were issued with warnings by the Mandaue City's Business Permit Licensing Office (BPLO) and the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) after these were caught selling liquor to minors last September 29.

Cebu City Councilor Rey Gealon said these establishments were situated side-by-side and are just around the school zone.

Gealon reiterated the existing Cebu City Ordinance No. 1413, otherwise known as the ‘Liquor Licensing Ordinance,” which bans all bars, beerhouses, and karaoke lounges within a 100-meter radius from schools and churches from selling liquor.

“Initially, store owners have to be warned of the violation. Should they not accede to the warning, suspension of their license to sell liquor and alcoholic beverages is in order,” Gealon told the members of the media.

He added that if these warned establishments continue to serve liquor to minors, they would face revocation of license and permit, which would eventually bar them from operating their business.

The same resolution also urges the city’s BPLOs to actively and intensify their continuous monitoring on establishments around the school zones in the city to ensure that alcoholic beverages will not be sold to minors.
