Capitol inaugurates level III water system in Poro, Camotes

Robhe Jane C. Yara - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu provincial government inaugurated the level III water system project in the town of Poro in Camotes Island last Saturday.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, with Poro Mayor Gary Rama and other officials, led the event in time with the ongoing first quarter Caravan of Provincial Government Services for the fifth district on Saturday.

A level III water system is a water supply facility with a source, a reservoir, a piped distribution network with an adequate treatment facility, and household taps, as defined by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

According to Sugbo News, the Capitol media arm, the water system would benefit barangays Esperanza and Mercedes so that residents would not have to wait by the roadside for water rationing in neighboring barangays.

In August 2020, the province granted P24 million in funding for the waterworks project during Garcia's visit to the island to mark the reopening of the tourism industry in northern Cebu.

The level III waterworks system is projected to benefit barangays Teguis, Mercedes, Esperanza, Cagcagan, and Adela.

The project was said to come in two phases that would benefit around 6,000 households.

Garcia also encouraged local government units (LGUs) then to operate and manage their own waterworks system that could provide 24/7 service to each household.

"It's better for LGUs to manage their own waterworks systems, so there is clear infrastructure and accountability," Garcia said. — GMR (FREEMAN)
