CEBU, Philippines —  A total of 229 applicants were hired on the spot out of around 4,500 who joined the Lapu-Lapu City job fair the other day.

The job fair started at 8 a.m. and concluded by 5 p.m. with 3,008 job openings offered by 18 companies.

“Gipaningkamutan sa Chan administration, kutob sa among mahimo, mao ning saad namo kaninyo, isip among campaign promise, nga gustoon namo nga matag pamilya mo-asenso ug molambo ang ilang panginabuhi,” said Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan during the opening of The Outlet-PESO Lapu-Lapu City job fair.

“Job for the jobless” is one of the mayor and his party mates' agenda and campaign promises during the election period.

Chan said that for more than two years, all workplaces and business establishments stopped their operation because of the pandemic.

“Karon hinay-hinay na gyud nga nabalik ang atong ekonomiya sa atong dakbayan sa Lapu-Lapu. Mao nang nabalik na pud ang panarbaho sa dakbayan sa Lapu-Lapu,” he said, as local and international flights are now coming back.

“Ang Chan administration dili mohunong para kaninyong tanan nga kamo maka-trabaho,” Chan further said.

Aside from the opportunities of having to apply with 18 different companies, there were other free services offered by the job fair.

Likewise offered were manpower training and vaccination for first dose and second dose, ncluding booster shots, for those who will be required by their prospective employers.

The mayor thanked Kim Francisco, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) head, for initiating the city’s  job fair in partnership with MEZ2 Estate and Aboitiz InfraCapital and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

He also thanked Anton Perdices, chief operating officer for distribution of Aboitiz Business Group, Aboitiz Power, together with MEZ 2 Estate, in The Outlet, which served as the host of the job fair. — JMD (FREEMAN)
