Concilor pushes for more garbage transfer stations

CEBU, Philippines —  A Cebu City councilor has reiterated his suggestion for additional garbage transfer stations in the city.

Councilor Eduardo Rama Jr. said there should be at least three transfer stations located in the north, south and central since the current transfer station in Barangay Inayawan is not enough.

“Sige na ko og balik ana nga suggestion,” said Rama.

Rama is the City Council’s committee on public services chairman.

The councilor explained that if there will be additional transfer stations, garbage trucks can easily address their respective areas’ trash and easily respond with regard this matter.

Inayawan Barangay Captain Kirk Bryan Repollo raised his concern regarding the situation along the White Road where the transfer station is located.

During their 2nd quarter general assembly Monday, Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) president Franklyn Ong disclosed that the Binaliw landfill reportedly would no longer accept trash directly from the city as the trash must come from a transfer station starting Thursday, June 17.

Currently, Repollo said a long line of garbage trucks can be seen at the transfer station coming from both north and south barangays.

“Karon, taas jud kaayo ang linya sa garbage trucks didto karon. Ang mga garbage trucks didto, gikan sa transfer station abot didto sa timbangan ang linya. Mga puno-puno jud ang basura kay ang mahitabo sad ani I think even ang volume ani, more than double jud ni,” said Repollo.

Aside from this, Repollo also raised concern on the damaged road where garbage trucks would pass going to the transfer station and even the Department of Public Services office in the barangay.

He is appealing to the city government to immediately fix the road so that it would not be hard also for garbage trucks as well as for residents utilizing it.

“Mao ra jud ang hangyo sa mga tawo nga maayo ni ang dalan sa White Road kay karon samot ni mo-worse gyud ang situation diri sa atong dan diri sa White Road kay mas daghan garbage trucks, dagko ang garbage trucks. Ang mga garbage trucks mas mobug-at tungod mas modoble ang volume nga karga sa basura,” he said.

Further, Repollo also said he is concerned for the health of the residents in the area considering the present situation.

Acting Mayor Michael Rama called for an emergency meeting yesterday with all stakeholders to address the matter, which he considered as “urgent.”

“That should be an immediate matter to (address),” said Rama.

The acting mayor said he will discuss this with the Department of Engineering and Public Works, DPS, Councilor Rama, and other representatives from the executive department. — GMR (FREEMAN)
