Tugade inspects Metro Cebu bike lane project
CEBU, Philippines — The 138.90 kilometers bike lane network which traverses the cities of Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Cebu and Talisay is 63.96 percent complete covering 88.84 kilometers as of May 5, 2021.
The Metro Cebu bike lane network project which is expected to be finished by May 31, 2021, was inspected by Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade yesterday.
Tugade, along with other transport and government officials, first inspected the South Road Properties road section of the Metro Cebu bike lane network which is a joint project of the DOTr Road Transport Sector and Department of Public Works and Highways.
In his message before the ceremonial bike ride, Tugade expressed his gratitude to Cebuanos and for the cooperation and support of other concerned agencies for the continuous creation of bike lanes, which will boost the promotion of active transportation in the country.
The secretary also reminded bikers to observe minimum health standards while on the road.
DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport Mark Steven Pastor said that it is Tugade’s directive to ensure that the bike lanes are safe that can be used by the public not just for leisure purposes but to use daily in going to work or to other destinations.
DPWH-7 regional director Edgar Tabacon has commended Tugade and the entire DOTr for the much-needed establishment of the bike lane network in Metro Cebu.
“The bike lane [network] has been a long dream of our people. Not only is biking the cheapest in the market but also [for] the health benefits it can give. This is not only for recreational purposes, but [for] going to our work as well," Tabacon said. — GMR (FREEMAN)
