Pesquera to run for Congress; ‘Sir Chief’ also shows interest

CEBU, Philippines — The top elected official of Barug Team Rama Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella is willing to endorse Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera for the congressional post in the south district.

Yesterday, Labella told reporters that he has trust and confidence in Pesquera being a responsible and an outspoken city legislator.

He said Pesquera is qualified to run for South District representative since she is a lawyer and an accountant who can help in the formulation of laws for the general welfare of the Cebuanos living in the south district.

“Of course, being a lawyer would help a lot in formulating laws.  And Councilor Pesquera is not just a lawyer, she is also a certified public accountant. So she can ably represent the  city of Cebu in bringing up meaningful, local legislations as well as national legislation that would effect of the whole country,” Labella said.

However, Labella said the views of all Barug Team Rama PDP Laban members shall be heard before deciding on this.

He said the official slate of Barug Team Rama PDP Laban will be released on the filing of certificate of candidacy (COC) next month.

Earlier, former mayor Michael Rama has expressed his support to Pesquera’s possible candidacy in Congress.

Rama is the leader of Barug Team Rama, wherein majority of its members were affiliated to PDP Laban.

Last Saturday, Pesquera announced that she is interested to run for congresswoman and among her priorities include the establishment of a park in all barangays and memorial halls.

She added she will sponsor a bill that will increase the number of representatives of Cebu City in Congress, from two to four.

Meanwhile, Labella admitted that he wanted Cebuano actor, Richard Yap, to run as their north district candidate for Congress.

At present, Yap is helping out in the distribution of Malasakit Card to the city’s beneficiaries.

In a separate interview, Yap said he has yet to decide whether or not to run for the position.

“I am thinking about it.  There are people asking me. I am seriously thinking about it because there are people asking me to run for the past five years, I think,” Yap said.

In fact, he prefers not to discuss his priorities and projects if he will decide to run for Congress because he doesn’t want to pre-empt it.

Yap grew up here in the city. During his elementary and high school days, he is a student of Sacred Heart School and took up Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology at Velez College.

Yesterday morning, Yap transferred his voter’s registration to the city.

In 2016, Yap was registered in Taguig City. At present, he is residing in Barangay Apas. (FREEMAN)
