Sonny O. blames ‘uncooperative’ council for stalled projects

CEBU, Philippines - Toledo City Mayor Sonny Osmeña has admitted that the City Council’s “being uncooperative” is obstructing the implementation of his projects.

“The City Council, with its being uncooperative (to the executive department), is hampering our abilities to act for the good of the people,” said Osmeña, a first-term mayor.

Osmeña, who is also a former senator, did not elaborate on these projects but the council had reportedly stopped them from being implemented.

“There are too many of them (projects whose implementation has been stopped),” Osmeña said.

In May this year, the Court of Appeals allowed the city government to use the controversial P619 million budget for this year.

The majority of the council had asked the Regional Trial Court to issue an injunction for the disbursement of the annual budget as it was reportedly passed without a quorum.

Early this year, Osmeña had also turned down the request of the city police for logistics support, saying that the council, with seven of its members belonging to the opposition camp, is jeopardizing the approval of all his requests.

Osmeña said he has already filed “so many cases” against these councilors. — (FREEMAN)
