Agency offers maritime job for Yolanda victims

CEBU, Philippines - A maritime agency is set to train and employ qualified super typhoon Yolanda victims in Cebu, Tacloban, Negros and Panay as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Klaveness Maritime Industry will train some pre-selected victims to be a deck and engine boys as their initial job beginning  April 27 to May 30.

Qualified trainees must belong to a  poor family with at least three years studies in a maritime institution and enthusiastic for the job.

Around 20 qualified trainees together with their respective parents went through an orientation yesterday in Cebu City for them to be given an overview on what to expect in the two months intensive skills training.

The training will be conducted by Zamboanga del Sur Maritime Institute in Pagadian City.

Captain Khravic June Sitchon, KMA operations manager, said the trainees are assured of immediate employment. Each trainee’s training cost around P30,000.

KMA has been in the Philippines for the past 36 years giving opportunities to those who have less in life.

“Pagkatapos ninyo sa inyong two months training, bagong buhay na talaga,” said Gilbert Garcia, KMA recruitment and training officer, during the orientation.

Garcia said most of their trainees who graduated are deployed to cargo vessels or container vessels worldwide.

For the deck boy position, a trainee will undergo training on anchoring and mooring operations and hangway, pilot and ladder preparations, among others.

For the engine boy position, a trainee will undergo training on assembling of engines, latte machine operations, bunkering and ballasting preparation, among others.

Sitchon added that these two positions serve as a stepping stone for a higher position and a much better pay.— (FREEMAN)
