DepEd partners with VECO in the K to12 Program

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Education has partnered with the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) for the technical-vocational (tech-voc) education under its K to 12 Program.

DepEd yesterday inked a memorandum of agreement with VECO for a pilot tech-voc education program of Gothong National High School, the biggest public high school in Cebu City.

The school was chosen as the recipient of the P1.7 million worth of tech-voc programs to be initially offered to 40 students.

Under the program, classes will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions with metal works and food trade as the starting programs that will be offered.

As of the moment, there are now classroom renovations, teachers’ training, equipment purchasing and installation in time for the start of  the school year 2014-2015.

“This is to give chance to adults to continue education. It also helps improve the local economy and image,” said VECO chief operating officer Sebastian Lacson.

Lacson said that this is a chance to those willing to learn and make a living but did not get to finish school in time.

For his part, DepEd Cebu City Division education program supervisor, Dr. Danilo Gudilusao, said this public-private partnership is a very good preparation for the Grade 12 program where students enroll in technical-vocational program before getting to college.

“This is very significant for our full implementation of  K to 12. A very big help for DepEd. This period is critical for us on how to implement grade 12 in 2016,” he said.

Meanwhile, VECO continues with its rewiring project in public schools with Subangdaku Elementary School as the first recipient for 2014 worth P960,150.

A memorandum of agreement was also signed yesterday between VECO and

DepEd Mandaue City Division represented by schools division superintendent, Dr. Virginia Zapanta.

“This is a great opportunity to express our gratitude. This helps us in our God-given mission of molding the lives of children. God always sends people and organization to help,” Zapanta said.

VECO’s rewiring project has helped 26 schools in Metro Cebu since 2010 with the total amount of P5.27 million.  (FREEMAN)
