Barangay officials to assist census

CEBU, Philippines - The city government is asking the help of the barangay captains to assist the teacher enumerators conducting the 2010 census on population and housing in their respective barangays.

Cebu City Planning and Development Coordinator Paul Naigel Villarete yesterday met with the barangay captains to inform them of the request from the National Statistics Office after the enumerators were complaining that they were not allowed access in walled communities like subdivisions.

The refusal of some households to welcome teacher enumerators is giving the NSO a hard time to complete the survey. Villarete said they explained to the barangay captains during the meeting the importance of census in the local development.

“We tried to have a meeting with barangay captains para ang NSO maka-explain sa barangay captains unsa ka-importante ang census para sa barangay. Because census determines their population and the IRA (Internal Revenue Allotment) depends on your population. So kung mogamay ang population, mogamay sad ang IRA,” Villarete said.

He said they already got the commitment of the barangay captains that they will assist enumerators.

For walled communities like subdivisions whose owners are usually not available on weekdays, NSO personnel and barangay captains agreed to conduct the survey during weekends.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
