Cops take up case of drug courier's son

-

CEBU, Philippines - Authorities seemed to have been moved by the case of the cocaine courier arrested last week who said he was forced to engage in the illegal drug trade so he could have the money to look for the man who killed his son.

The homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office said they will follow-up on the status of the warrant of arrest issued against the man who alleged killed the son of Vedasto Corsiga Sr.

Corsiga was arrested during a buy-bust operation at Barangay Capitol Site last week. Seized from him were 12 packs of suspected high-grade cocaine amounting to P720,000.

Corsiga, 56, a native of Tubigon, Bohol would later say he was forced to engage in the illegal drugs trade so he could earn money to look for the man who killed his son. He said he was forced to take the law into his own hands because the police are allegedly slow in solving the crime.

The younger Vedasto, who worked as a cook at a Korean restaurant, was walking home when he was robbed by two men in Barangay Sta. Cruz September last year. One of the suspects subsequently shot him.

Corsiga said the gunman is just wandering free in barangay Sambag 2, but the police have not placed him under arrest.

Inspector Vicente Velasquez, chief of the homicide section, however, said they have no information on the current location of the fleeing gunman, but already filed a case against the arrested suspect.

Velasquez said Corsiga’s family should have immediately channeled the information to them because they would have acted on it immediately.

“Ang crime solution man gud is not one way. Dapat with coordination sad with the family,” Velasquez said, adding, that his office also has to attend to other cases and other important matters everyday.

“If mao nay recourse nila, i-sulti nila ang information na naa sila,” Velasquez added.

The police officer further said that they have already scoured Sambag 2 three times, particularly B. Rodriguez Street where the assailants fled after the incident, but they reportedly failed to locate the gunman.

Early on, they arrested one of the suspects and filed a robbery with homicide case against him including the alleged gunman, Fritz Labora, a resident of Bonbon, Pardo who used to hang out at Barangay Sambag 2.

During Corsiga’s arrest, Police Regional Director Lani-O Nerez said Corsiga’s reasons behind his actions do not justify his involvement into the illegal activity. Still, Nerez requested that CCPO follow-up the case of Corsiga’s son. — Niña G. Sumacot/JMO
