Ex-convict shot dead

CEBU, Philippines - An ex-convict who allegedly used to be a fixer of an emission testing center and insurance agency was shot dead by two unidentified men onboard a motorcycle yesterday morning around 7:20 in barangay Dumlog, Talisay City.

The fatality was identified as Jijones Cauba, alias “Joe”, 47, and a resident of the said place.

Cauba was allegedly on his way to barangay Poblacion when one of the assailants shot him in the head.

The perpetrator ran to a man on a motorcycle and both of them were last seen heading to barangay Mojon of the said city. The place where Cauba was shot was estimated as a mere 20 meters away from his house, police estimated.

The mother of the victim in an interview over dySS said that her son is a good person and does not have enemies.

But Dumlog barangay captain Charles Basillote said one time the victim’s mother went to him for help claiming she was mauled by her son.

“Kaila gyud mi aning pamilya nila kay naa raman pud ni dapit sa among balay ilaha, hinuon wala gyud mi naabot anang puntoha nga naabot sila sa barangay pero ang mama ni Joe ari gyud na dangop nako,” Basillote said.

Basillote also said that Cauba was involved in robbery in Naga and Cebu City a few years ago and was imprisoned in Muntinlupa. After Cauba was released from jail he allegedly shot it out with a policeman and was arrested after he was wounded in the abdomen.

“Murag naa sa tuig 2002 ngadto sa 2003 siya nakigpinusilay sa police diha sa bridge sa barangay Mojon. Nadakpan man gani na siya pero ambot nganung nakagawas,” Basillote added.

PO2 Lino Diez of the Talisay City police said most of the people in the area would not give any information regarding the killing.

“Imposible gyud kaayo ni nga way nakakita sa pagpusil ug sa mga suspect kay daghan gud ‘ning tao dire dapita pero sige lang basin unya karong taud-taud naay mupatim-aw dayun nga mo-witness,” Diez said. — Gabriel C. Bonjoc/BRP   (THE FREEMAN)
