The 80/20 formula

Justine Therese Juntilla USJR Masscom - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The same 80/20 rule has also been adapted by the diet conscious as a life philosophy to live by.  Ironically, though, in their case it's about balance. They use the 80/20 formula as guide in their eating habits.

No, the 80/20 formula is not a diet set. Instead, it is a map towards proper diet. It advocates discipline in one's lifestyle. How does it work? It's simple, really. It merely entails making healthy food choices 80 percent of the time. For the remaining 20, well, it's the time one could enjoy a slice of cake or a scoop of ice cream.

For most people, following a strict diet plan is difficult, especially if it does not allow sweet treats. Those who try it often end up on a binging spree after completely depriving themselves of such rewards. The 80/20 formula makes it a little easier for people to be consistently responsible in their food intake.

This point was emphasized by fitness guru Ms. Lita Quisumbing, during the "Shape up" event in Banilad Town Center. She encouraged the practice of the 80/20 formula by everyone. Ms. Quisumbing also gave tips on simple physical exercises that can be done at home and at work. She pointed out that even proper diet needs to go with regular exercise.

In the 80/20 formula, it is okay to be "naughty" for a day but without overdoing it. People are more likely to stick to their drawn eating routine if they allow themselves to indulge their cravings a bit every once in a while. A little of one's favorite sweets and carbohydrates won't do much harm in between long stretches on fresh fruits and vegetables, for example.

The important thing to remember in being "naughty" 20 percent of the time is to watch the portions and sizes. While occasionally giving in to a craving once in a while, overeating shall be avoided. Too much of anything at any given time is not good.

It is said that we are what we eat. To be healthy, we need to eat healthy - at least 80 percent of the time. And we need to exercise regularly, too!
