Taking a pause

BUSINESS AFTER BUSINESS - Romelinda Garces - The Freeman

The circus in our country goes on. To watch the news needs one to have the right mindset. To be stable or you either end up laughing or scared. At the rate our leaders are working on things prioritizing politics above the state of the nation--but well, this is the state of the nation indeed and to think I was wondering where the comedians are these days.

So let me get out of politics and walk into the movie industry. In my time we had comedians like Dolphy and Panchito, Palito, Chiquito, and all those slapstick funnies that made part of my childhood enjoyable. Now we have Long Mejia, Michael V and the whole Bublle Gang. We continue to have Pokwang and Ai-Ai delas Alas. But again, even at this mentions my age is revealed.

We had local movies that would always maintain the value that crime does not pay, and good deeds bring in good karma. Now our movies have maintained the same love themes. There continues to be oppression, poverty and gap between the rich and the poor. Well, we try to be adventurous and create twists that bring in action but I find myself looking for more of the movies that would make me laugh. The soaps somehow become the life pattern of many Filipinos. And this is sad because the stories that show opulence also highlight corruption and greed most of the time. And they seem to be prophetic as we live it.

A movie is a good medium for influencing a mindset. Movies open minds, expand views and allow an experience as people engage and get glued to the screen.  Movies introduce perspectives and provides the viewers with the option to choose among the values depicted by the characters. It would be a good source of strategic thinking and helpful views that would shape better ways of dealing with life and confronting issues instead of being drawn into the dark gritty defeat of suicide.

Aside from movies, we need more plays. We have a good number of drama talents. We have wonderful scripts. They can be worthwhile to invest in as people are so tired of the realities of life. Depression pervades. With all the pressure of knowing or not knowing what is happening good entertainment may give a pause to a confused mind until it balances itself again and finds life worth living, and the challenges worth hurdling.

Let’s bring in the fun!
