Laughter is a healing medicine

Katherine R. Oyson - The Freeman

Pastor Joel Osteen confided that her mother was diagnosed of terminal cancer in 1981. But  her mother didn’t dwell in her illness,  nor it stopped her appreciating the joy of life. Every day she watched cartoons and had a hearty laugh all by herself. Until now, she is still enjoying the beauty of life.

Osteen commented, “… How long since you have a hearty laugh? Don’t lose the child within you. Most of us allowed the pressure and stress of life to rob us the joy of living. Healthy adults know how to work and play. Extremely joyful people enjoy long life. Laughter is a man-made tranquilizer. Don’t you know that too much sickness is related to sadness? Laughter improves your immune system. It reduces your high blood pressure. Every night watch something funny. Find something funny to laugh out loud.  A merry heart does good, like medicine; but a broken spirit dries the bones." ( Proverb 17:22).

According to the HELPGUIDE.ORG  website, it's true that laughter is a strong medicine. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts moods, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effect of stress. As children, we used to laugh hundreds of times a day, but as adults life tends to be more serious and laughter more infrequent. By seeking out more opportunities for humor and laughter, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happiness – and even add years to your life.”

The “ Laughter, The Best Medicine” section of the “Reader’s Digest”  tickled me pink and gave me a hearty laugh. I would like to share with you some of the funny items so that you too can have a  hearty laugh:

•A wealthy 75-year-old widower starts showing up around town with a beautiful and much younger wife. “How did you get her to marry you?” his friend asks. “I lied about my age.”  “You told her you were 60?” “No, I told her I was 90.” (Reader’s Digest, Dec.2016/ Jan.2017)

• All her life, Victoria was told that the women in her family were able to walk on water on their 21st birthdays. Victoria takes a boat out  onto the lake, steps off, and sinks.  Back on land, Victoria confronts her mother. “You told me that every woman in our family could walk on water on her 21st birthday. " “It’s true,” says her mother.  “But when I just tried it,  I nearly drowned!” "That’s because your sisters and I were all born in December. You were born in July.”  ( Reader’s Digest, Dec.2016/Jan.2017)

• A police officer jumps into his squad car and calls the station. “I have an interesting case here,“ he says. “A woman shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just mopped.” “Have you arrested her?” asks the sergeant. “No, not yet. The floor’s still wet.” (Reader’s Digest, May 2016)

• A woman noticed her husband standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in his stomach. “Ha! That’s not going to help,” she said. “Sure, it does," he said. “It’s the only way I can see the numbers.”
