Disappointing finish for Yulo

MANILA, Philippines — Carlos Yulo’s bid for the floor exercise gold medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands ended with a thud.

Yulo, the reigning Olympic champion in FX who’s fresh from winning the same event in last month’s Asian Games in Japan, wound up eighth and last with a score of 13.233.

The Filipino star’s cause was hurt by a fall in the second pass of his routine, which ultimately contributed to a -0.3-point penalty on his scorecard of 5.800 (difficulty), 7.633   (execution) and 0.1 (bonus).

On this night, the 2019 FX world titlist yielded the spotlight to his rivals. American Frederick Richard won his first mint in the worlds with a 14.633, dethroning British Jake Jarman (14.600). Israeli Artem Dolgopyat, the 2023 champ, was third with 14.466.

Yulo quickly moves on as he’s set to defend his title in the vault apparatus tonight.
