Palace: Keep September 21 protests peaceful

MANILA, Philippines —  Malacañang yesterday reminded those who will participate in mass demonstrations on Sept. 21, the 54th anniversary of the declaration of martial law, to hold their activities peacefully and in accordance with laws.

Palace press officer Claire Castro stressed that President Marcos respects the right of Filipinos to express their views and grievances. 

“First of all, the President will not suppress our fellow citizens from expressing their sentiments,” Castro said.

“Our police force is prepared. Our appeal to our fellow citizens is, while it is your right to speak out and make your voices heard to ensure your message reaches the government, please do so without resorting to violence,” she added. 

A construction worker from Tondo, Manila died from a gunshot during anti-corruption protests in Mendiola on Sept. 21 last year.

To prevent violence, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered PNP commanders to intensify intelligence monitoring for security threats.

More than 15,000 police officers will be deployed.

Cause-oriented groups are planning to mobilize at least 10,000 activists for anti-corruption protests on Sept. 21.
