Ssangyong Motor returns

MANILA, Philippines – The fourth largest Korean automaker has found a new distributor, Berjaya Philippines. At the helm of SsangYong Berjaya Motor Philippines, Inc. (SBMP) is industry veteran Dave Macasadia. Macasadia is SBMP’s Managing Director while Francis Lee serves as the Chairman. Lee is also Chairman of Berjaya Auto Philippines, Inc.—the exclusive distributor of Mazda as well as an Executive Director of Bermaz Motors, the exclusive distributor of Mazda in Malaysia.

Volkswagen upgrades selected models

At their annual Media Appreciation Night held at the Volkswagen Bonifacio Global City showroom, the German carmaker outlined their product plans for 2016 after a banner 2015. This includes the introduction of upgrades and enhancements to existing product lines: Jetta, Polo, and Tiguan. The Jetta finally receives a dual-clutch automatic gearbox while the Polo and Tiguan receive more equipment.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport

After seven years, this best-selling midsized SUV finally gets a full redesign and now boasts of even better performance, comfort, and safety features. As the fourth country to receive the all-new Montero Sport, it’s now available at all Mitsubishi dealerships in four variants: GT 4WD, GLS 4WD 6MT, GLS Premium A/T, and the GLS 2WD A/T. All models are powered by a Euro-4 compliant 2.4-liter diesel engine with MIVEC technology—the first in the world.

Toyota Fortuner

It’s one of the country’s bestselling vehicles, known for its durability, reliability, and all-terrain capability. With a name taken from the word, “Fortunate”, the all-new model is designed around the premise that customers who’ll flock to the Fortuner will see it as a prestigious SUV to own. The upgraded model features brand new drivetrains and a slew of new technologies.

Aston Martin holds Ride & Drive

Aston Martin Manila holds its first ride-and-drive activity with a “leisurely drive” from its showroom in Bonifacio Global City to Alabang. Leisurely is all relative because a trio of Aston Martins makes up this convoy. Arriving with the least power of the bunch is the N430—the commemorative Nürburgring package of the V8 Vantage packing 430 horses. Next is the grand tourer of the group, the Rapide S with 550 horsepower from its V12 powerplant. Finally, it’s the V12 Vantage S—the fastest production Aston Martin in history with a 565-horsepower V12 under the hood.

Mitsubishi Motors announces participation in CARS program

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced its decision to participate in the CARS Program (Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy Program). Along with initiating production of the two models, MMC plans an initial investment at MMPC of over PHP 4.3 billion (approximately 10.4 billion Japanese Yen) which includes investment on a new stamping plant. MMC will then further expand investment as well as employment at MMPC in line with production capacity expansion.

Ford Explorer 2.3 Limited

After being thoroughly impressed by the 2016 Ford Explorer Sport, Ford Philippines has announced the availability of a new variant that slots below the Sport: the Explorer 2.3 Limited. This model effectively replaces the old 3.5 V6 making the Explorer the second Ford model to be powered exclusively by the EcoBoost engine family. The first is the Escape.

Foton opens assembly plant in Clark

The 11-hectare assembly plant is the first assembly established in the Clark Freeport Zone. Nissan PH celebrates NP300 Navara’s 1st anniversary

The NP300 Navara was also named as the Truck of the Year 2015 by the Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI), during the vaunted Truck Wars which started that year. Overseas, the NP300 Navara also won the coveted 2016 International Pick-up Award (IPUA) in Lyon, France.

Subaru revamps Forester

Subaru revamps their bestselling compact crossover with a regional debut held at the Bangkok International Auto Show. The 2016 Forester has a refreshed design, plusher interior, and added safety features. In terms of drivetrain, it keeps the same 2.0-liter engine in both normally-aspirated and turbocharged versions. The latter also receives Torque Vectoring Control for better handling.

Mazda MX-5 is World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year

The Mazda MX-5 has won the 2016 World Car of the Year award. It is the second Mazda to win the award, following the Mazda2 in 2008. The third generation MX-5 was one of three finalists for the same award in 2006, as was the Mazda3 in 2014. In addition to taking the main award this year, the MX-5 has also been named World Car Design of the Year. It is the first time in the history of the awards that a single model has taken both titles.

Best Kia dealerships recognized at Annual Dealer Convention

Ford EcoSport and Everest new variants

The bestselling Ford nameplate ever, the EcoSport gets a new limited edition trim that goes above the range-topping Titanium model. Dubbed the EcoSport Black Edition, this sub-compact crossover swaps some of its high-gloss silver trim pieces for black ones. The more rugged appearance package is completed by the cross bar roof rails. Inside, the well-appointed Black Edition gets more piano black accents as well as aluminum sports pedals and an aluminum scuff plate. On the other side of the size spectrum, the Everest line is joined by a new Titanium 2.2 4x2 A/T Premium variant. The Titanium 2.2 4x2 A/T carries with it all the features of the 3.2L 4x4 A/T Premium variant without the 3.2-liter engine or the 4x4 transfer case.

Hyundai Veloster

Marking its return to the Manila International Auto Show, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) launches a new brand campaign that focuses on customer-driven innovation. And taking center stage in Hyundai’s stand is the Veloster. After years of teasing its arrival, the unique-eye-catching Veloster is finally in Hyundai’s showrooms nationwide. Under the hood, the Veloster is powered by Hyundai’s turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine (T-GDi) delivering 204 hp at 6,300 rpm and 265 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm from just a displacement of 1.6-liters. The all-aluminum engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Chevrolet sets Sail

Realizing that the entry-level passenger car is the fastest growing automotive segment in the country, Chevrolet is entering into it head-on with the new Sail. Developed primarily for developing countries, the Sail is built on the new-generation small car architecture and contains a bevy of family design cues such as the dual-port front grille. Apart from being stylish, the Sail’s sculpted and slender exterior hides one of the most spacious interiors in its class. Ensuring a peppy yet efficient drive, the all-new Sail is powered by a 1.3-liter engine mated to a 5-speed manual while the 1.5-liter engine comes with a 4-speed automatic. The smaller engine generates 103 hp and 127 Nm of torque while the larger one maxes out at 113 hp and 141 Nm of torque.

Mazda CX-5 and Mazda6 go diesel with Skyactiv-D

Mazda springs a surprise by bringing in its much-vaulted Skyactiv-D technology into the CX-5 and Mazda6. The drive brings their new offerings from Makati to Batangas for a proper shakedown. These Euro-4 compliant diesels feature earth-moving torque while still having NVH bettering the Europeans.

Kia tours Negros

Huwag maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan (Don’t be a foreigner in your country). It’s a call that Kia Philippines and Columbian Autocar Coporation (CAC) heeded well as they brought six of their best-selling vehicles to the island of Negros for a three-day journey across three provinces.

Honda unleashes much-awaited all-new Civic

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) is celebrating its 25th anniversary by going back to where it all began: the Civic. At the festivities commemorating this occasion, HCPI unveiled the all-new, tenth-generation Civic, a car that pushes the compact segment envelope in terms of styling, driving dynamics, and advanced technologies. It’s available with either a carryover 1.8-liter engine or a brand-new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine both mated to an Earth Dreams CVT transmission.

Volkswagen Golf variants

As a venerated nameplate in the Volkswagen range, the Golf has been around for seven generations and 43 years. Throughout its history, it’s become the brand’s best-selling vehicle (outselling even the Beetle) and has won numerous awards and accolades worldwide. After laying down the foundation by introducing the high-performance Golf GTI last year, Volkswagen Philippines has followed through on its promise to bring more variants of the Mk. 7 Golf with the introduction of the Comfortline and Highline.

Nissan GT Academy 2016

Nissan Philippines, Inc. (NPI) confirmed its participation in the upcoming Nissan GT Academy 2016. This was announced during an exclusive screening of the Nissan GT Academy reality show, produced by NPI’s broadcast partner, ABS-CBN at the Bonifacio High Street Cinema. A virtual-to-reality racing competition, the Nissan GT Academy gives aspiring race car driver a chance to fulfill their dreams of participating in a professional international race.

Isuzu mu-X

Isuzu is giving its best-selling mid-sized SUV, the mu-X a slight revamp for 2016. Launching it at the 4x4 Action Playground at the SM Mall of Asia, the 2016 mu-X features the added benefit of cruise control as well as better aerodynamics thanks to a new rear spoiler. Apart from the mu-X, Isuzu also revamped its venerable Crosswind as well.

Suzuki Ertiga

Fans of Suzuki’s fast-selling Ertiga are in for a treat as it gets a minor refresh this 2016. Dubbed the “Life Utility Vehicle” or LUV, the Ertiga has become an integral part of Suzuki Philippines’s line-up. And now, after two or so years in the market, it gets a refreshed look. Along with more interior features, there’s certainly more to like with this small MPV.

Ayala Corporation is now distributor of KTM

At its annual stockholders’ meeting, Ayala Corporation has announced a new brand which will join the conglomerate’s automotive product line: KTM.  The announcement was made by Ayala Corporation President and COO Fernando Zobel de Ayala. KTM is an Austrian-based company engaged in the development, production, and distribution of motorized vehicles for recreational purposes, particularly under the brands KTM and Husqvarna. They offer a wide range of award-winning off-road and street motorcycles as well as the track-focused KTM X-Bow. KTM’s aggressive plans for the Philippines include the plans to manufacture bikes locally.

Hyundai PH rolls out Commercial Vehicle line; reveals pioneering dealerships

Foton adds new Toplander variants

Foton Philippines is adding two new lifestyle variants to its Toplander SUV range: the Toplander Executive and Toplander Xtreme. These two new variants are designed to cater to particular lifestyles and interests, especially if you find the regular Toplander just a tad too tame. The Toplander Executive adds a dose of luxury such as rain gutter and LED daytime running lights as well as leather seats. Meanwhile, the Toplander Xtreme gets a snorkel and buffed up alloy wheels.

SsangYong Ride & Drive

SsangYong gave the Tivoli, Korando, and Rodius their first shake down with a ride and drive to Bataan. Knowing that the road to success is a long and challenging one, SsangYong is a brand that’s aiming to be different. During the drive, there’s no doubting the amount of continuous polish and refinement that goes into each new generation vehicle. Combine that with a new team, it’s easy to see that the curfew of mainstream brands looms near. It’s not going to happen overnight, but change is indeed coming.

TOTAL and Filoil

Total and Philippine oil company Filoil have agreed to create a joint venture for the fuel sales business in the Philippines. The combined business will grow Total’s network from 206 to 442 stations and its retail market share from 3 percent to 6 percent. The joint venture will also benefit from a strong supply infrastructure throughout the archipelago.

Honda Odyssey gets 8-seat variant

After enjoying success with its executive suite on wheels, the Honda Odyssey, Honda Cars Philippines (HCPI) is adding a new variant only this time, it’s catering more to the family-oriented set. A year after the launch of the Japan-made Odyssey, HCPI is adding an 8-seater variant to the model range.

The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI), the country’s exclusive importer and distributor of Chevrolet vehicles has announced the opening of the brand’s newest dealership located in Imus, Cavite. Chevrolet Imus Cavite is the Bow Tie’s 24th dealership in the country, strengthening the brand’s presence in the country even further.

Honda refreshes Accord

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. is now showing some love to its Accord executive sedan by offering it with a sharper exterior design and a host of new convenience and safety features. Nissan Motor takes 34 percent of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., will take a 34 percent stake in Mitsubishi Motors Corporation after the two companies signed a Basic Agreement to form a strategic alliance between the two automakers. The deal, worth 237 billion yen is extending an existing partnership between Nissan and Mitsubishi under which the two companies have jointly collaborated for the past five years. Under this Basic Agreement, Nissan and Mitsubishi have agreed to cooperate in areas including purchasing, common vehicle platforms, technology-sharing, joint plant utilization, and growth markets.

Chevrolet opens in Ilocos Norte

The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI), the exclusive importer and distributor of Chevrolet automobiles and parts in the country, reinforces the love for the bowtie brand in the northern part of Luzon with the blessing and inauguration of the new Chevrolet Ilocos Norte. Located in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, the new 1,100 square meter dealership facility is the third dealership under the management of the Laus Auto Group.

Mitsubishi Motors PH gets approval for Philippine Mirage assembly

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) announced it received a Certificate of Registration from the Department of Trade and Industry’s Board of Investments, as one of the participants under the Philippine government’s Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) Program. In line with this, the company shall be investing around P 4.3 billion to set-up its new production line for the Mirage model which is expected to be operational early next year. This total investment includes P 2 billion investment for a stamping shop facility.

First Petron-DOE Euro 4 Fuel Economy Run

Recently, the Department of Energy (DOE) together with the country’s biggest oil company, Petron, held the first Euro 4 fuel economy run. Used as dry run to come up with a standardized measure of fuel economy under the Philippine Energy Standards and Labeling Program or PESLP (the same group that determines the efficiency of your electric fan or refrigerator), 70 cars from 22 brands participated.

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wins at “Engine Oscars”

Ford has done a five-peat with their 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. For the fifth consecutive time, the “tiny engine that can” has been voted best in its class in the International Engine of the Year Awards—the so-called Oscar Awards for engines. A panel of 65 automotive journalists from 31 countries judged the 1.0-liter EcoBoost the best, citing its drivability, performance, economy, refinement, and technology. It beat 32 other engines, 19 more than it competed against in 2012. The same engine was the first to be named overall International Engine of the Year for three straight times in 2014. It was also named 2012’s Best New Engine.

Subaru expanding to more locations in Phl

Motor Image Pilipinas, Subaru’s exclusive distributor in the Philippines and the ANC Group of Companies has announced a northward expansion with the formal opening of Subaru Pampanga. Operated as Mt. Ararat Motors Inc., Subaru Pampanga will service customers in the bustling Central and Northern Luzon area. Subaru has announced plans for more showrooms along Commonwealth, Quezon City; Caina, Rizal; Camarines Sur; Iloilo; and Bacolod.

Honda City AVN update

As Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI)’s only locally produced product, the City sub-compact sedan sees small changes since its launch in 2014 keeping up with the latest technology and innovation. Isuzu mu-X Club drive

A group vehicle owners who have bonded together in a shared passion for their Isuzu mu-X SUV recently organized a trip in which highlighted was the primary reason for their transportation choice—their families. The mu-X Club, the biggest group of mu-X owners that is recognized by Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC), gathered together 24 of its members to take on the mu-X Club Bicol Express Caravan. Along with their families, the members started their three-day trip in San Pedro, Laguna, then traveled across the Bicol region to Legazpi, before winding their way back to Metro Manila.
